What is five mind therapy?
Have you ever felt like words just aren’t enough?
Five Mind Therapy was born from the realisation that people are deeply complex and experience life in ways that often go beyond words. A single moment can hold a spectrum of meaning, much like a prism refracts light into a rainbow of colours. How we understand and respond to an experience depends on the angle from which we view it emotionally, mentally, and relationally.
I believe that all natural systems, including our minds and bodies, have an inherent tendency toward healing when the right conditions are present. Healing isn’t just about addressing what caused us pain but understanding what may be preventing us from moving forward in spite of the pain. It requires us to look inward to explore our behaviour, emotions, and psychology while also looking outward at the relationships, systems, and patterns we exist within.
At Five Mind Therapy, healing is about taking a holistic approach to understanding ourselves through five interconnected themes: Connection, Stories, Meaning, Intuition, and Systems.
The Five Minds Framework
Connection
“Connection is why we’re here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.” - Brené Brown
Connection is fundamental to health and happiness. This includes connection to ourselves, others, nature, and a sense of purpose. When we feel disconnected, our sense of belonging and well-being can suffer. Building meaningful connections is central to healing and growth.
2. Stories
“As we become aware of ourselves as storytellers we realise we can use our stories to heal and make ourselves whole” - Susan Wittig Albert
Our experiences are often shaped by the stories we tell ourselves or the ones passed down to us. These narratives influence how we see ourselves and our place in the world. Five Mind Therapy helps clients recognise disempowering stories, rewrite their own narratives, and take charge of their life’s direction. This isn’t about changing our story, but changing our relationship to our story and the meaning it holds.
3. Meaning
“Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he should recognise that it is he who is asked.” - Viktor E. Frankl
Life is full of experiences that go beyond logic. Finding meaning in our emotions, challenges, and even abstract experiences such as art, music and dreams, can help us connect to and understand different aspects of ourselves and enrich our lives.
4. Intuition
“Intuition is perception via the unconscious that brings forth ideas, images, new possibilities and ways out of blocked situations.” - Carl Jung
Our inner wisdom, or intuition, is often an untapped source of strength. By learning to trust our gut feelings and accessing deeper truths, we can uncover insights that guide us toward healing and self-trust.
5. Systems
“Systems don't change easily. Systems try to maintain themselves, and seek equilibrium. To change a system, you need to shake it up, disrupt the equilibrium. That often requires conflict. To me, conflict is a deeply spiritual place. It’s the high energy place where power meets power, where change and transformation can occur.” - Starhawk
Systems shape our lives, often in ways we don’t immediately recognise. From recurring themes in relationships to unhelpful cycles that hold us back, recognising these patterns allows us to break free and grow. This perspective also includes examining larger systems such as family, cultural, and societal structures that impact our experiences.
A Holistic, Trauma-Informed Approach
Five Mind Therapy integrates various therapeutic approaches, including Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, CBT, ACT, and Eco-Psychotherapy. It draws inspiration from the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoist philosophy, and systems thinking, blended with a person-centred and trauma-informed approach.
The heart of Five Mind Therapy lies in meeting clients where they are, creating a safe, supportive environment for exploration and growth. This framework supports individuals facing challenges such as addiction, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and questions about meaning and purpose.
